UGT regrets the death of a worker in a citrus factory in Fortuna (09/10/2019)

UGT deeply regrets the death of a worker hired through a Temporary Work Company (ETT), as a result of a work accident, in a Fortuna company, where she performed citrus selection tasks, although at the time of the accident she was performing cleaning tasks, an issue that must be investigated from the labor point of view and prevention of occupational hazards.

In the absence of knowing the specific data of the relevant investigation, everything indicates that there has been a failure of the security measures, so we consider that the accident could have been avoided.

For UGT it is again evident that working for an ETT in the Region of Murcia implies, in general, assuming highly precarious working conditions.

Legislative modifications related to the labor market, the approval of the ETT Regulation, abolishing guarantees for its constitution and leaving aside the improvement in the protection and defense of the rights of the workers made available by this type of companies, added to the policies The austerity of recent years has meant an increase in job insecurity and informal employment.

Hundreds of thousands of underemployed people, with strenuous work days, together with the proliferation of the submerged economy and the precarious work conditions causes a strong impact on their health and quality of life.

Once again, the high rate of part-time employment and job insecurity entails very little training in prevention, ignorance and lack of experience in the job, result in such accidents.

We insist on the need for employers to make real and non-virtual compliance with occupational risk prevention measures, and for the Regional Administration itself to redouble its efforts to combat this labor and social scourge.

From UGT we demand an in-depth investigation of this lucid fact that allows us to know the working conditions in which the worker provided her services.

On the other hand, we claim the need to strengthen the work of the Institute of Occupational Health and Safety of the Region of Murcia (ISSL-RM) and that the resources of the Labor Inspection and the Prosecutor's Office be increased.

The objective should be to reverse this situation by strengthening the instruments against accidents.

For this reason, and to stop this bleeding we demand from the Regional Government and the Labor and Social Security Inspection that more means, more efforts and greater vigilance be dedicated to scrupulously complying with the law.
